Mrs. Gladney Accepting a Leadership Award

In the heart of Guilford County, North Carolina, one woman’s vision and commitment to education have transformed the lives of countless students. Charlene Gladney, the founder and executive director of Operation Xcel, has dedicated over 17 years to combating the alarming dropout rates in the region. Her journey from a successful corporate career to a community leader in nonprofit education exemplifies the power of passion and perseverance.

Charlene Gladney founded Operation Xcel in response to the significant challenges faced by at-risk youth, including socioeconomic barriers and a lack of academic support. With a mission to provide targeted assistance and opportunities, she aimed to create a supportive environment where students could thrive. Under her guidance, the program quickly evolved from dropout prevention into a comprehensive academic enrichment initiative that fosters a love for learning and builds essential life skills.

Charlene's educational background is impressive; she holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from North Carolina State University and a master’s degree in the same field from North Carolina A&T State University. Before dedicating herself to nonprofit work, Charlene spent 20 years at Xerox Corporation, where her corporate expertise complemented her longstanding community service as a tutor and mentor.

Since its inception, Operation Xcel has positively impacted the lives of over 3,000 young individuals, providing after-school and summer programs, mentoring, and career exploration opportunities. Charlene has received numerous accolades for her work, including the 2023 Black Business Ink Power 100 Award and recognition as Non-Profit of the Year by High Point University’s Center for Community Engagement.

Her commitment to uplifting marginalized communities extends beyond her work with Operation Xcel. Charlene is a well-respected voice in community engagement and nonprofit management, sharing her insights at conferences and advocating for the importance of education and social growth.

Charlene Gladney embodies the spirit of community empowerment and educational advocacy. Through Operation Xcel, she continues to inspire students and forge pathways to success, proving that, with determination and support, every young person can achieve their dreams. Her journey reminds us of the profound impact one person can have in shaping a brighter future for generations to come.
