What We Do

Family Engagement

Family Engagement

The OPeXCEptionaL Family Project™ occurs annually during the Operation Homework after-school program.  The OpeXCEptionaL Family Project primarily targets the need for advocacy and building positive, goal-oriented relationships with families.  Through a combined commitment from school partnerships, Operation Xcel aims to foster meaningful relationships with families based on respect and empathy.  Student achievement and overall well-being are at the core of the project.  Success is measured by evaluation, feedback, and student social/emotional and academic progress.  Operation Xcel's family engagement initiative is integral to everything we do, including, but not limited to, monthly parent nights, parent cafes, workshops, information sessions, and community engagement presentations.

Parent Nights (monthly)

Parent Nights are exciting opportunities to celebrate the incredible journeys of our students in our innovative STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) programs! Experience a vibrant showcase of projects and skills developed throughout the month, and engage directly with students and educators. Each site hosts this event monthly, either individually or collaboratively, creating a rich tapestry of learning and celebration. Don't miss your chance to support and connect with our future leaders!

Parent Cafés (monthly)

A Parent Café is a supportive, informal gathering designed for parents to share the challenges and successes of family life. These monthly sessions emphasize peer-to-peer learning and self-reflection, guided by the Strengthening Families Protective Factors™ framework to enhance resilience, parenting skills, and community support.

Led by parents for parents, the Cafés incorporate culturally responsive practices, offering free childcare and transportation assistance for accessibility. This program aims to empower parents, promote leadership, and foster a sense of community.

Student Showcases (bi-annually, end of summer)

A Student Showcase is an event where students from the Operation Homework program present their projects in areas like STEAM, robotics, and life skills. It celebrates their creativity and dedication while highlighting the community support that makes their achievements possible. Attendees can connect with students, hear their stories, and witness the positive impact of this program on their lives. Join us in celebrating the accomplishments and futures of our talented youth! The Student Showcases take place at the end of the Operation Homework Winter and Spring semesters, and at the conclusion of the 3-Steps-Ahead Summer program.

Back-2-School Parent Resource Fair (annually)

The Back-2-School & Parent Resource Fair serves parents and students in grades K-8 in Guilford County and Stokesdale who are preregistered to enroll in the Operation Homework afterschool program in August. Hosted annually by Operation Xcel in July, the event features workshops led by community partners on topics like transitioning to high school, digital parenting, self-care, and IEPs. Attendees receive valuable resources from community partners, enjoy activities for children, and are provided with breakfast, lunch, book bags, and school supplies to support a successful school year.

We send invitations for the Back-2-School Parent Resource Fair to families registered for the Operation Homework program at our eight host sites. If space remains after accommodating all Operation Xcel families, we will open registration to the public.
