Engineering Career Equity

The 3:30 PM Pivot: Engineering Career Equity at Jackson Middle School

In East Greensboro, the bell that rings at 3:30 PM at Jackson Middle School marks the beginning of a critical window for workforce preparation.

Jackson Middle is a hub of academic innovation, led by a dedicated team of Multi-Classroom Leaders (MCLs). These elite educators work behind the scenes to coach and train teachers to deliver top-tier instruction by tailoring their coaching to each teacher's preferred learning style. However, for many students in Title I schools, a gap remains. Even with world-class teaching, students often need personalized, direct reinforcement to "seal" complex STEAM concepts—support that is often locked behind a steep Out-of-School Time (OST) paywall.

Operation Xcel: The Student-Level MCL Model

Operation Xcel hosts one of our seven Operation Homework programs at Jackson Middle, serving as a Pre-Academy Incubator for the prestigious Toyota "Driving Possibilities" initiative located at the Academy at Ben L. Smith.

At Operation Xcel, we believe that a student's zip code should never determine their career ceiling. We mirror the MCL "coach" philosophy by applying it directly to the student. Through our Operation Homework (OH) program, our certified teachers and mentors act as personal coaches, curating learning based on each child's unique style—whether that means hands-on experiments for kinesthetic learners or visual demonstrations for others. We facilitate individualized, targeted tutoring designed to bridge the OST paywall at no cost to our families.

Engineering the Future: The Academy at Ben L. Smith

Our goal is to ensure Jackson students are academically prepared for the high-growth, lucrative careers targeted by the Toyota "Driving Possibilities" initiative. This program at the Academy at Ben L. Smith connects classroom learning with real-world applications in skilled trades and engineering—preparing students for local opportunities like the Toyota  Battery Plant.

Through Operation Homework and our 3-Steps Ahead summer camp—which prevents learning loss and prepares students for the rigors of the next grade—we ensure that Title I students have the foundation needed to claim their Guilford Guarantee.
