Since its inception in October 2000, the Lights On Afterschool movement has grown to encompass over 8,000 celebrations nationwide. This incredible initiative aligns seamlessly with the core mission of Operation Xcel: to provide safe, high-quality, and accessible afterschool programming. As a non-profit, our foundational purpose is to equip youth academically, socially, physically, and emotionally through future-focused afterschool, summer, and mentorship programs. This deep commitment to student support began when our founder, Charlene Gladney, stepped up to help 22 students who were at risk of dropping out of high school. Charlene successfully guided that entire first group of scholars to high school graduation by providing a safe space combined with one-on-one support where no question was ever “stupid”. Because of her unwavering advocacy, many of those students went on to college and trade schools.
The Afterschool Alliance has long been a powerful champion for programs like ours, advocating for vital initiatives such as the After-School All-Stars, the YMCA, and 21st Century Community Learning Centers. Operation Xcel is proud to align our mission with these national efforts through our active partnerships with 21st CCLC, the city of High Point, and several other community organizations. This collaborative support network was beautifully highlighted when, in response to a proposal from our team, High Point Mayor Cyril Jefferson signed a proclamation officially recognizing October 22nd as Lights On Afterschool Day. We are immensely grateful to have the vocal backing of local leaders like Mayor Jefferson, as their support directly amplifies our non-profit's ability to serve our youth.
Operation Xcel provides continuous, holistic support to our students, which includes a year-round emphasis on STEM education. To celebrate Lights On Afterschool Day and showcase the enriching environment our non-profit cultivates, our scholars are engaging in a variety of empowering, student-led activities. Across our sites, students are building vital teamwork skills, participating in Social Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons, designing puzzles, painting artwork, and executing hands-on science experiments. One of our sites is even hosting a vibrant UV/Blacklight event, literally keeping the bright lights shining to symbolize the guiding light that afterschool support provides!
We are over the moon about the enthusiasm radiating from the dedicated staff and bright students who make up our program. Our non-profit thrives because of this incredible ecosystem of support, from our curious children to our deeply caring parents. We invite you to celebrate Lights On Afterschool with us by championing the crucial support afterschool programs provide, and by showcasing the boundless creativity and success of our students!
