Shaping the Next Generation: A Reflection on Leadership and Investment

At Operation Xcel, we often talk about the "potential" of our students. We see it in the classrooms, in the late-night study sessions, and in the quiet moments of academic struggle. But rarely do we see it come to life as vibrantly as it did during our recent Gala, when alum Jeremiah Pettijohn took the stage.

Now a freshman in the Honors Marketing program at North Carolina A&T State University, Jeremiah is a "proud Aggie" and a living testament to what happens when mission-driven support meets a student’s inner fire.

A Mission That Changes Lives
Our mission is to change lives every day. For Jeremiah, that change wasn’t a single event, but a gradual realization of his own power.

"Before I stepped onto a college campus, I was a student trying to find direction, build confidence, and understand what I was capable of becoming," Jeremiah shared.

He reminded us that success is rarely a straight path; it is shaped by the people who choose to believe in a student before that student fully believes in themselves. This is the heartbeat of our work: providing the reassurance that shifts a student's perspective from "out of reach" to "attainable."

Living Our Values: Discipline and Accountability
At Operation Xcel, our values aren't just words on a wall; they are the tools we give students to build their futures. Jeremiah’s speech highlighted exactly how these values manifest in the real world.

He spoke of Operation Xcel as a place where he developed discipline—learning that showing up matters even when you don’t feel like it—and accountability, understanding that high goals require a high level of responsibility.

"Those weren’t just lessons that stayed in the space," Jeremiah noted. "They followed me into every next step of my journey."

A Purpose Rooted in Leadership
The purpose of our programs is to equip students not just to graduate, but to lead. Jeremiah’s story proves that academic support is simply the foundation for something much larger: The Courage to Lead.

Because of the foundation built here, Jeremiah didn’t just attend high school—he led it. Serving as Student Government President and National Honor Society President, he used the voice he found at Operation Xcel to advocate for his peers and create meaningful change. As he put it: "Operation Xcel didn’t just prepare me academically; it prepared me to lead, to speak up, and to step into rooms with confidence."

Our Vision for the Future
Our vision is a world where every student has the support to reach their highest potential. Jeremiah’s success at NC A&T is a direct reflection of that vision in action. But as he rightfully pointed out, this impact carries a responsibility.

"For students like myself, it means taking what you've been given and using it to create opportunities for others. It is not just what you achieve individually: It is about how you use it to uplift others."

Join Us in Making a Difference
Jeremiah closed his speech with a powerful reminder: "Someone out there is a student who just needs an opportunity."

To our donors, mentors, and partners: You are not just funding a program. You are opening doors. You are the spark that ignites lasting change. We invite you to continue this journey with us as we invest in the limitless potential of our young people.

Everything can change with just one person who believes. Will you be that person?

About Operation Xcel

Operation Xcel is dedicated to promoting eXcellent Communities, Education, and Leadership by equipping youth from kindergarten through middle school with the tools to excel in every area of their lives. Through our future-focused afterschool and summer programs, we provide a foundation for lifelong learning, diversity of thought, and career mindfulness. A cornerstone of our impact is the 3 Steps Ahead Summer Enrichment Program, a five-week, full-day experience designed to help students retain gains from school while preparing for their next grade level, arriving three steps ahead of the rest of the class. This academic and social enrichment program is led by certified teachers who facilitate engaging lessons in Math, Reading, Science, STEAM, Robotics, and Social-Emotional Learning. Beyond the classroom, our students grow physically and socially through weekly swimming, mentorship, and unique field trips across North Carolina. At Operation Xcel, we believe in providing equal access to quality resources and fostering the civic engagement necessary for our students to make meaningful changes in the world.
