Public Announcement: Back to School Information & Resource Fair

On July 27, 2024, Operation Xcel will host a Back-to-School Information & Resource Fair at First Baptist Church at 1000 W. Friendly Avenue in Greensboro. This event is open to all parents and students in grades K-8 who attend schools in Guilford County and Stokesdale, and plan to attend Operation Xcel’s Operation Homework program in the Fall.  We expect all our 3-Steps Ahead Summer program participants and Operation Homework afterschool participants to attend this event.

Parents and children can look forward to a wealth of knowledge from our community partners, educators, and school resources. They will gain insights on crucial topics such as successful transitions to middle and high school, parenting in the digital age, the importance of self-care, SEL strategies for home, and more. Our community partners will offer take-away information brochures and other resources that we believe will be invaluable in their daily lives. These resources cover a wide range of areas, from reduced and free healthcare providers to those addressing food insecurity. We value the presence of students in grades K-8 and their parents at this event, and we eagerly anticipate their active participation.

There are incentives for attendance and participation in the Information & Resource Fair.

  1. Pre-registration and attendance are required to guarantee student participation in the 2024-2025 Operation Homework after-school program.
  2. Lunch will be provided for each student who pre-registered for the event and attend the 10:30 – 12 parent/student workshop.
  3. Free Book Bags & School Supplies will be distributed to families that complete all the following:

    a.      Preregister to attend the event.

    b.     Attend the general workshop from 10:30 – 12:00 and at least one other Parent/Student workshop; and,

    c.      Visit at least 3 vendor/resource tables.

  4. Lunch, book bags, and school supplies remaining after those who meet the previously stated requirements may be provided to other students who attend the event.

We understand the importance of creating a conducive environment for parents and students to fully engage in the workshops. To this end, Operation Xcel will provide a secure space for children not participating in the fair. Our staff will be on hand to provide engaging activities such as crafts, face painting, and games, ensuring a fun and safe experience for children of families attending the workshops.  These activity spaces will be available for parents to sign their children in for sessions from 9:30 – 12:30 and 10:30 to 1:30. For added security, parents must sign their child in and out of the childcare areas, and children will only be released to the parent who signed them in.
